Westward 2024 - My Mom, and The Rattlesnakes

Winter in the High Dessert
Winter in the High Dessert

February may seem like an odd month to travel for many, but for myself - I like it. The cold suits me and the roads and parks are less crowded so, for the past couple of years I have been on the road in early February - this year I won't be home in Boston until mid April.

Along the way I will meet with friends and family -

The Rattlesnakes = A group of fine artists/ friends who have made time to be together for a week in Texas. I will also meet with friends family in Colorado. Together we will remember my mother who passed away this past November. She is with me on this trip  and I think of her often - especially when I'm driving,
or singing,
painting
or laughing...

Well we finally made it to Texas and Big Bend national park - home - at least for a week in February to the Rattlesnakes. A group of about 12 artists who make time in there busy lives for a little camaraderie around the campfire...

and even more snakes

North now Carlsbad and eventually Sedona.....stay tuned :)

Have a great trip!

Hi Gary!
What a great tribute to your mom and your love of landscape! All the affection definitely shows in your paintings, Thank you for sharing this. I particularly loved the last clip of you and your mom walking down the path, so wonderful! The people we love remain with us in our hearts even after they pass on.
You've shown me the beauty in the everyday things Gary, the ordinary is really not so ordinary after all is it? As painters we can make our world anything we choose - how lucky are we?!
Thanks again for taking the time to include us in your life experiences and for showing us new paths to wander.
Sincerely, Pat

Thank you Gary for sharing with us your journey. Your loss is immeasurable, but so is the love left behind.

Gary, it sounds like all those miles on the open road with music as a soundtrack to those memories was healing. I sure hope it was. Memories really can fill in the vast spaces. The image of you and your mom walking away on that path reminded me of this Ram Dass quote, "We are all just walking each other home."
Here's to softening the edges of life. Have a safe trip home. We'll see you in the season if color.

One more thing. I have loved this song for a bit, now, and just realized it is about a twon outside of Big Bend. The lyrics are simple and exquisite. Hope you enjoy it: (hope this is the right link, the song is "Terlingua," by Gregory Alan Isakov) https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=4jlNsVk48MEandfeature=shared

Oh, man. That tribute to your mom had me in tears. XX

Hi Gary,
I’m so sorry to hear that your mom died recently. I saw her photograph with you and I thought she looked kind and friendly like you. I’m glad you felt her presence on your recent trip. Our moms never leaves us. I still feel the urge to call my mom or to ask advice about something. . I’m glad you had a pleasant trip and I look forward to seeing you again in class.

Dorothy

Hi Gary,

I was sorry to see that your mom died in November. I’m glad you felt she was with you on your trip. She looked like a friendly, warm person like you are.
It seems our mothers never really leave us. Since my mom died, I still have the impulse to call her or tell her something. I’m glad you had a wonderful trip. I enjoy your videos and your selection of music immensely.
Stay well.
Dorothy

I haven't been to your website for a while and missed this great video , what a wonderful tribute to your Mom, loved the pic of you two smiling, she must have been a great lady to raise such a great son. I will never look at Reeses peanut butter cups and..was it bourbon...without thinking of you two~

Thanks Everyone for your kind words - They mean a great deal to me!
Mom was my greatest supporter and champion - from an early age she made me feel that "anything " was possible !
The videos that you see on my blog were always made with her in mind - to show her what her son was up too!
with each post I feel I am still reaching her and see her smiling :)
