The Plein Air Season Begins

"Mayflower in March"
"Mayflower in March"

The warmer days have prompted the sap to rise and I am longing to begin Plein air painting...
My friends have the same urge and so we set off to Plymouth Ma for a morning of plein air watercolor, a gallery visit, and lunch with new friends.

The drive out of Boston was rather smooth, the three of us had not had this much fun in a while due to the pandemic , so there was some catching unto do and we made our plan during the hour drive down to historic Plymouth Ma

Painting the Mayflower

Painting an icon is challenging to the artist because we risk the cliche. One way to bypass the dilemma is to think more about the mood of the day and less about a portrait of the icon. We were at a "safe" distance and because of this my painting was more focused on the changing sky and reflections on the water...

The best Ruben
Well it has been a while since I felt comfortable sitting down at a restaurant - the spacing of the tables and the thoughtful waitress made me feel right t home. After scanning the menu I ordered a Ruben...How long has it been since I had a Ruben Sandwich..Yep it was memorable. Something about being in the open air all day made those flavors pop!

A gallery visit...

The New England Watercolor Society has a new home in Plymouth Center for the Arts and what a wonderful space. Like walking into a mansion with fireplaces, open staircase and plenty of windows. Paintings on every wall a unique combination of art in a home setting.

Love that you guys got out and started the season off right . Love the Artist At Work vests 😂😂😂

Whoo ee! Fun--

A sure sign of Spring

At least you are allowed to go out with friends and paint. Here in the UK we are not (yet).

Good to see you and the -boys” out painting again. I've been very lax over the winter but anxious to start up again as everything starts to bloom. Hopefully a little jaunt over to Mt. Auburn cemetery as the trees start flowering. I know the phrase -Men at Work” is well known - but, we women are well represented in construction also! We used to joke at Mass. DOT that only men would need a sign to let everyone know they are working. 🤣 Hope you are well and vaccinated! Maybe in the summer or fall you'll do some Plein Air classes in person? Best, Pat Trombly

So wonderful to see you all out and painting!

Gary - So great to see the video of you and your friends painting. Loved the -Mayflower in March”! Can't believe you were in my -backyard” now that I'm in Plymouth! Enjoying your new website and Newsletter - you have been busy this winter! Looking forward to connecting up with you around Coastal Living classes soon. Best - Bonnie

A true sign of spring! Now I want a reuben sandwich too

What a wonderful day you seem to have had. Thanks for the tip on approaching icons. Very motivating! Thank you for sharing. Beautiful painting too. Liana

Such a treat to read this! I've been out twice - Once to the Assabet Refuge in Sudbury, Mass. Was able to park and walk a short distance to a spot viewing the marsh. And, the Gristmill at the Wayside Inn to paint the stream around the gristmill. My kit now is watercolor and gouache, leaving the oil paints behind for a while. So glad you had a nice outing. Beautiful painting. Hope I can join in one of these days. Nancy Boyle

Thanks for the comments everyone - I will try to keep you all involved with our little group as we discover more venues...painting and culinary :)
